Salt and pepper squid, erm, with some chilli, garlic and oh a kick ass dressing? Not quite as catchy but still lovely to eat.
Squid is not popular with everyone. This I understand, however, the amount I have in this recipe cost me £1.20 from my local supermarket, it was a perfect amount for one and you would easily pay around £10 in a restaurant for a similar dish. What's more, this is one of my 10 minute recipes! Oh yes! Depending on how quick you are at weighing and giving stuff a bit of a stir, you are 10 minutes away from this lovely, lovely dish.
If you think you don't like squid, or it's too difficult to cook, give this a go. It's so easy. Maybe even double it up for you and a significant other, or more importantly make it for yourself as it's you that you need to love on Valentine's Day more than any other whether you are with someone or not!
Salt, Pepper and Chilli Squid - Serves 1
Ingredients
120g, 4oz Prepared squid
30g, 1oz Cornflour
1/4 tsp Fine salt
1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
1/2 dried chilli broken up
Large pinch garlic powder
For the dressing (optional)
Mix together:
1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
2 tsp fish sauce
Method
Heat about 1-2 cm oil in a wok.
Mix the flour and the spices together.
Cut up the squid into rings check there's not a hard bit near the tentacles and cut this off if there is. Mix with the flour mix with your hands to coat as well as possible and when the oil is almost smoking, fry in one to two batches for about a minute or until crisp and cooked through. Drain on some kitchen towel for about a minute.
Serve on a salad as above (I used cucumber and sugar snap peas in mine with a sprinkle of coriander / cilantro) or serve on it's own as a starter, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon or the dressing as above.
Because I've used cornflour not regular flour, this is also gluten free!

DeleteI'm so excited!! This is my favourite thing to order from the Chinese Takeaway but we are sworn off them at the moment. I could definitely make this though. Do Aldi or Lidl do squid does anybody know? My husband will only shop in Lidl!
ReplyDeleteNot sure but if you can sneak into one of the major supermarkets, they often do it on the fish counter or in the freezer cabinet. If you want to stock up though, it's worth asking at the fish counter as they often buy it in frozen so may be able to sell some to you still frozen.
