Sprouts with Lemon and Black Pepper

Sprouts, every year there is a new recipe for how to make them palatable.  If I'm honest, boil them for 6 minutes and I'm happy.  I love the delicious flavour, the texture which is at the same time like cabbage but yet firm and cute, but I am realistic, I know I'm in the minority.  I heard a joke today; "What's the most popular wine at Christmas?

Do we have to eat sprouts?"

But I tried this recently and decided it was pretty darn delicious, even if it does hide the lovely sprouty flavour (a little).

Sprouts with Lemon and Black Pepper - Serves 1 sprout fanatic as a side dish, possibly two for the slightly less fanatical.

Ingredients

100g, approx 4oz Sprouts (unpeeled weight)
15g, 1/2 oz Butter
1/2 clove garlic, finely chopped
Zest of 1/2 lemon
Juice 1/2 lemon
1/4 tsp black pepper

Method

Peel the outer layer off the sprouts.  Finely shred them.  Grate the lemon zest.

Heat the butter in a non stick frying pan and add in the sprouts, zest, pepper and garlic, fry until the butter is browning and the sprouts are getting a little colour in places.  Add in the lemon juice and stir well letting the liquid and steam from the lemon juice finish off cooking the sprouts.

Serve.  Great with fish or white meats like Turkey!

There is a story in my family that sprouts were called "Barbie cabbages".  I know that's not true because I didn't own a Barbie until I was 26, I was born in the 70s, Barbie was far too brash and American for my parents.  Still we used to grow pretty much all of our own fruit and vegetables.  I remember picking sprouts on Christmas Day which might sound cruel but it was one of the jobs on the allotment I loved.  Those tight little packages which were easy to pick, no thorns, no hassle.  Even cold fingers were not too much of an issue.  There was something great about escaping the mad house for a few moments of fresh air and peace.  Perhaps Sprouts have a special place in my heart because of it.

  1. Hah! Love that joke! I'm so going to be using that on my kids in the morning. Although they do actually rather like sprouts, as do I. A brilliant entry for The Spice Trail peppercorn challenge. Thanks so much for sharing.

  2. Excellent idea. I could eat brussel sprouts with just a pinch of salt too but this makes them special. I love Barbie cabbages.

    1. No problem, give your husband a go on this, it's very different to having them in the traditional way.
